apr 1, 1779 - The Mule is invented
Description:
In 1784, Samuel Crompton invented the Mule for cotton spinning. Cotton was one of the most used raw materials for the textile/cottage industry, and spinning it was a very tedious process. While older children and relatives prepared cotton for spinning, a mother and daughter used the Mule to spin the thread. From then on, the thread was weaved into textiles. The textile industry employed the most people and the Mule helped increased the textile output of these people, aiding the industry. This is an example of historical change, as new technology was being introduced to the traditional textile making process. Later, the Mule would threaten the cottage industry and initiate the transition to textile factories.
