**John Winthrop was a Puritan Leader from Massachusetts (a New England colony).** He was also the governor of Massachusetts for 19 years. He helped the colony to develop a representative government. Before Winthrop became governor, Massachusetts Bay Company established the colony with self-governing towns. Though Massachusetts had established religion as a very important part of every day life before Winthrop. Each town had a church and when Winthrop established the colony council, all members were male church members.
