Description:
Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders to Union General Ulysses S. Grant in the town of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, effectively marking the end of the Civil War. President Andrew Johnson would officially proclaim the insurrection over on April 2, 1866. Finally, after the readmission of Texas to the Union, Johnson decreed the Civil War was officially over on August 20, 1866.
