Francisco Franco was the general and leader of the Nationalist forces that overthrew the Spanish democratic republic in the Spanish Civil War. Later on he was the head of the government of Spain until 1973 and head of state until his death in 1975. On July 17th 1936, the Spanish army (which was led by Franco) rebelled against the second republic. They wanted to destroy the left wing organizations. General Franco and the other leaders instructed the army to kill the "bolsheviks" "like a dog". General Franco and the nationalists ended up winning the war, and Franco then ruled the country until his death in 1975.
