may 10, 1931 - Burning of the Convents
Description:
Starting on May 10th 1931, over 100 convents and other religious buildings were burnt down during riots in Spain. These riots started in Spain and spread throughout the entire country. This all started because a right wing group in Spain played a monarchist song "Marcha Real" by an open window while a large group was passing by on the street. This caused some of the passersby to become enraged, which led to the spread of protests across all of Spain. This ended up being important because of the response from the Spanish Republic. While some people wanted to restore the order, Manuel Azana resisted, saying that "all the convents of Spain are not worth the life of a single Republican, if the Guardia Civil is deployed, I resign." This means that he believes the convents weren't worth it to risk the lives of the people who he would have to deploy to end their riots.
