Gold was first discovered in California by James marshal at Sutter's Mill near the city of Coloma. Before the goldrush there was about 14,000 non-Native Americans living in California. In 1849 about 90,000 people arrived to hunt for gold.
It was an important part of history because it brought a lot of people to California
