mar 3, 1820 - Missouri Compromise

Description:

The Missouri Compromise was an attempt by congress to keep the balance of power between slave states and free states. Missouri was admitted to the US as a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. To settle the issue for the future, it was said that all states below the 36th parallel would be slave states and all states above would be free states (except for Missouri.)
Tensions between the north and the south were increasing because of the issue of slavery, but the Missouri compromise helped to diffuse these tensions for a little bit and it helped to prevent war for almost 30 years.
