Located in Knutsford, Cheshire, England, Heathwaite House is the home of Elizabeth Gaskell's Aunt Lumb who took her in after her mother's death 13 months after Elizabeth's birth. There, she grew up a Unitarian -- a dissenter of the Anglican Church.
In "North and South," Margaret Hale's memory of Helstone is reminiscent of Gaskell's own childhood of picnics, garden parties, cousins, and friends. This background influenced her religious beliefs and her subsequent marriage to Unitarian minister William Gaskell.
