Lading on the shores of Sicily in May 1860. His guerilla band of a thousand Red Shirts outwitted the 20,000 man royal army, gained volunteers, and took Palerno. He and his men then crossed the mainland, marched towards Naples, and then went to Rome to attack the pope.
