another Jabhat al-Nusra suicide bomber detonated
a truck loaded with explosives outside the al-Hayat hospital in Aleppo’s Saad
al-Ansari district, killing at least thirty people. The hospital had been transformed into a Syrian army position and several checkpoints near the facility
and the nearby 7th April Stadium were raided shortly after the truck bomb
was detonated. Although neither of these attacks facilitated the actual capture of significant territory, they demonstrated the capacity of groups such
as Jabhat al-Nusra—with willing suicide bombers—to impose unpredictable
and virtually unavoidable damage on fortified regime positions. This was a
unique advantage that jihadists would come to exploit, especially in northern Syria.
