jan 29, 1850 - The Compromise of 1850

Description:

What: Proposed by Henry Clay, this compromise admitted California as a free state, did not regulate slavery in the remainder of the Mexican cession, and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act. This compromise was intended to defuse the tensions which were building between pro-slavery and antislavery political leaders.

Important People: Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, and Stephen Douglas

Led to War: Because of the building tensions, Henry Clay actually tried to prevent the Civil War. Although his compromise worked for a period of time, eventually, hatred flamed up as quick as it died down.
