On the 28th of August 1963 over 250,000 people marched on Washington to the Lincoln Memorial. The protest is often called the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom as participants were protesting the inequalities towards the African American population.
Many musicians performed at the event along with influential speeches. One of the most famous speeches from the march was Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I have a dream’ speech, which touched the hearts and inspired many Americans. This speech discussed the future of the world and how everyone can walk hand in hand in peace.
As a result of the march on Washington, the Civil Rights Act was passed, banning discrimination against all people. Therefore, this peaceful protest helped change the lives of millions of Americans and set the standard of civil rights across the world.
