jan 1, 1830 - The Dawes Act
Description:
The Dawes Act showed a change in the government's approach towards Native Americans as they started to offer citizenship in order to assimilate Native Americans from their culture into America's culture. This was an attempt to bring the population out of poverty. However, the twist to this offer was that they would only offer citizenship to those whose land was exchanged for an allotment. Land became “fractionated”(Native Partnership), having multiple ethnicities living in the remains of the allotments in the reservations. This forced Native Americans to develop the habits of society and ‘civilized life’. After 25 years, more than 90 million acres of land was lost.
