feb 14, 1859 - Oregon Joins the Union

Description:

Prior to 1818, both America and Britain claimed the land known as Oregon. After 1818, they both agreed to a "joint occupancy" of the area. The Oregon Territory, established in 1848, was before part of the territory that encompassed the Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Montana regions before it broke off.

When Americans began traveling westward in the 1840s, they began to settle in Oregon Country for its fertile land and rainfall. The American population eventually grew so high that Britain gave up on the land and gave it to America through the Oregon Treaty in 1846. Before the treaty was finalized, Polk and Britain fought over where the northern border of America's Oregon would be. Polk wanted it at the 54*40' line, while Britain wanted it at the 42nd Parallel. They eventually compromised at the 49th Parallel.

When gold was found in the 1850s, more Americans came into the region and pushed the Native Americans out. This made them mad, and the US Army fought them until the Natives were moved to the Oklahoma region.

Although Oregon was known for its anti-Black exclusion laws early on, they were not widely enforced but scared African Americans from the region. Oregon was entered as a free state on February 14, 1859 despite this.
