may 29, 1848 - Wisconsin Joins the Union
Description:
Previously part of the Northwest Territory, Wisconsin has a history of interactions with British Canadians but fell under American control after the War of 1812.
By traveling the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes, many people traveled to the Wisconsin area for its farmland and mining potential. Miners would live in makeshift caves, giving them the nickname of "badgers." Eventually, it was made its own entity with its own capital, and its population reached a whopping 130,000 people.
Wisconsin tried to become a state four times prior to its last successful attempt but failed because the population feared that their taxes would increase, which would make a stronger central government. The 5th time eventually was successful because Wisconsin citizens were jealous of the federal programs the states around it were getting.
It became a free state.
