dec 14, 1819 - Alabama Joins the Union
Description:
Before part of the Mississippi territory, Alabama became its own territory when Mississippi became a state and then later on applied for statehood itself. People had "Alabama Fever" and decided to populate the area, and it eventually had enough people to become a state. Huntsville was a very popular town in the area, serving as its temporary capital. In the summer of 1819, Alabama's constitution was written by elected representatives in a cabinetmaker's shop. There was a lot of dispute about where the actual capital should be, and it moved from Cahaba to Tuscaloosa to Montgomery.
