jul 28, 1932 - The Bonus Army
Description:
The Bonus Army was a group of 43000 (17000 veterans) who gathered in Washington D.C. to demand money for the years of service however their demands were rejected. The demonstrators established themselves to stay for a long period of time by setting up camps and tents. General Mac Arthur unwilling to deal with the deal with the protesters ignored President Hoover and ordered the military and police to undertake extreme measures to secure the capital. They used gas and clubs against the demonstrators and burnt their camps.
This incident was seen as a sign of heartlessness of the President by the public.
Also speculation of Hoover losing his presidency due to this.
