America had two major political parties ; the democrats (DONKEY) and the republicans (ELEPHANT).
The democrats believed in a big government meaning higher taxation, community and social responsibility (welfare) holistic approach.
The republicans believed in a small government meaning that they were primarily isolationists. They were also based on individual rights and justice (People can sort things out themselves and the christian value that people will help if they can) free capitalism with little taxation allowing big businesses to grow.
The Americans voted for republican (Lincoln's party) due to the Legacy of the american civil war ill will between north and south
