may 4, 1948 - The 1948-49 asparagus strike

Description:

Starting on May 4, 1948, more than 4,000 Filipino workers walked off their jobs and formed picket lines in the 1948-49 asparagus strike called by the local 7. They demanded wage increase, better housing, and an end to the holdback system.

The brutality of the police and growers didn’t scare Filipino, instead, they became more united. The outcome of the strike was successful. Growers agreed to recognize the union and the working conditions were improved.
