apr 7, 1939 - The FALA Strike
Description:
The Filipino Agricultural Laborer’s Association (FALA) demanded a 20 cent wage increase per hundred pounds of asparagus and called for a general strike of all asparagus workers on April 7, 1939.
Significance: On that day, almost none of the 6,000 Filipinos reported for work, which shows the unity of Filipino/a workers. It was a successful strike because growers capitulated to the demands later. FALA was then known as the first solid Filipino labor organization. This first victory of FALA led to its subsequent strikes and boycotts.
