On Sunday, March 7th, 1965 six hundred marchers assembled in Selma. They crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River on route to Montgomery, but just short of the bridge, Alabama police and state troopers blocked the way and ordered them to turn around.The protesters refused so the officers began to shoot tear gas.
