Rouhani was elected by an overwhelming majority. He replaced the foreign minister and much of the leadership responsible for Iran's nuclear energy program. He is a moderate, and his foreign minister is an American diplomat and is American educated. Rouhani advocates for greater personal freedoms, breaking from the traditional authoritarian tendencies of Iran. This is a global event because the election of a moderate wiith a western foreign minister means that Iran is starting to attempt to fix the broken relationship with the west, particularly America.
