jul 6, 1768 - Vice Admiralty Courts
Description:
Created by Britain and used to enforce the Trade and Navigation Acts. Cases dealing with smuggling had previously rarely been convicted in local courts, in these courts they were tried more harshly. In these courts the defendant didn't have the opportunity to present their case in front of a jury, the judge made the decision on his own, and the defendant was automatically assumed guilty until he proved himself innocent.
