jan 9, 1760 - Writs of Assistance

Description:

Court orders giving customs officers the right to do general searches through people's property for contraband. They didn't have to specify what they meant by contraband, they could look through whatever they wanted. They could even go through people's homes. It was another attempt to crack down on smuggling, but got out of hand.
