jan 1, 1649 - Puritans under Oliver Cromwell
execute the English King 1649
Description:
King Charles I of England wanted only one religion under his rule and tried to force the Anglican Church onto Presbyterians. Because of this, an English Civil War began. The supporters of King Charles were called Royalists and the non-supporters were called Puritans. The leader of the Puritans was Oliver Cromwell, who lead them to defeat the Royalists. The Puritans did something never done before. They gave King Charles I a public trial before executing him.
