jan 1, 1553 - Mary I begins rule and restores
the Catholic Church 1553
After Henry VIII died in 1547, his son Edward VI ruled for 6 years from the age of 9, until his death. This left the throne empty for Mary I to take rule of England. Under her rule she changed the church back to Catholicism from previously being protestant. She also had many Protestants executed in order to reduce some of the resistance fought because of the change back to Catholicism.
