After attempting to keep all his subjects Catholic, Charles V was tired of wars. Even though he defeated the Protestant princes in 1547, he couldn’t force them back into the Catholic Church. He finally gave up and ordered all German Princes to gather in Augsburg. They decided that each ruler would be allowed to decide the religion of their region. This was known as the Peace of Augsburg and is still very famous today. This was important because it helped relieve some religious tension in England.
