jan 1, 1975 - Theatre in the 1970's

Description:

The main type of theatre in the 1970's was musicals. The 1970's was a very important era that changed music and musicals forever. The 1970's made rock the number one music type to listen to. Broadways first ever rock musical was Jesus Christ Superstar. It premiered in 1971 and played for 720 shows in Broadway. This was the start of the rock musical era. One year later grease came out and won over many hearts with its theme set in the 50's, as high school kids found friendships and romance. The show went on for 3 388 shows in Broadway, setting the new record for Broadways new longest running musical. Another trend with musicals was to take old ones and put a rock spin on it. A couple examples being the Wiz which was based off of the wizard of Oz, and Rockabye Hamlet which was based off of William Shakespeare's, Hamlet.
