The free soil party was a short lived political party that originated in New York. This party's main purpose was to oppose the expansion of slavery in the Western Territories. The party argued that free a free man on free soil constituted a morally and economically superior system. This party was made up of the Barnburners, the Whigs, and the liberty party, all of who also objected slavery.
