As a teenager, sometimes during Thanksgiving dinner, while all of my extended family is downstairs talking, I am willing to be the only person who isn’t there because I want to sit on the couch and lie down while I digest the irresponsible amount of food that I just ate. I feel comfortable doing what I want, not shameful as I second guess my decision to separate myself from the group. I learned this sense of independence as a toddler - I didn't need others to be happy and became comfortable making my own decisions.
