In 1861, King Wilhelm I became king of Prussia. In 1892, he appointed Otto von Bismarck as his Prime Minister. Both were supporters of German unity and decided to use Bismarck's policy of "Blood and Iron", or war and military strength to conquer the German Confederation. They did this with a series of wars against Denmark. Austria, and France, and after the defeat, the German princes assembled in the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles and proclaimed Wilhelm I as the German Emperor, thus founded the German Empire.
