Ferdinand set sail with five ships and was the first European sailor to cross the Pacific Ocean. He also discovered the Strait of Magellan. He originally went on this voyage to seek the Spice Islands. Portugal had turned him down but luckily for him Spain was willing to sponsor. This is the first time European countries are seeking outside of all they've known. It is the beginning of an important trend that will sweep the Mediterranean.
