Ray Tomlinson has the idea to associate these two programs to send messages to a connected user on another computer. He designed two mailboxes on two computers, named BBNA and BBNB and located side by side, and managed to send himself the very first email. It uses @ because it is a symbol that is not used in any clean or common name which is ideal for playing the role of separator.
