IDEA should have been reauthorized in 2009 but this reauthorization was, and continues to be, delayed due to changes in the No Child Left Behind Act, which is now the Every Student Succeeds Act (US Department of Education, 2018). The government and society is yet to determine how these two legislations can exist most beneficial. To what extent should students with disabilities be held to statewide testing standards? To what extent is it beneficial to provide accommodations to students with disabilities, and how can this be done without segregating them from the general education classroom? How can schools be held accountable while still given flexibility within the classroom? How can individualized learning plans be generated and carried out for every students when resources in the school systems are increasingly limited? These are the questions our nation is dealing with today.
