Description:
On April 6th, 1862, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston surprised General Grant's troops. The Union forced the Confederate troops to withdraw from the railroad center. Union forces gained control of most of western Tennessee and part of the Mississippi River. It was costly for both sides, with 11,000 Confederate losses, and about 13,000 Union losses.
