aug 18, 1516 - Concordat of Bologna
French King Francis I and Pope Leo X reached a mutual agreement in which the Pragmatic Sanction's assertion on superiority of a general council over the papacy was rescinded. The French Crown was given the right to appoint French bishops and abbots. The papacy was given the right to receive the first year's income of new bishops and abbots. From this point forward, French kings controlled appointment of higher clergy and therefore controlled ecclesiastical policies within the kingdom.
