oct 14, 1888 - Roundhay Garden Scene

Description:

A french inventor, Louis Le Prince recorded this short, first silent movie in England. It was filmed at Joseph and Sarah Whitley's home at Oakwood Grange with characters, Adolphe Le Prince, the Whitley's and Annie Hartley. They are seen walking through the garden of Oakwood Grange, when Sarah is walking backwards while turning around. Joseph's coat tails fly as he's turning, as well. This short movie was originally filmed on Le Prince's old camera, but was remastered in 1931 by the National Science Museum. At the time, this was made as an experiment in capturing people in motion, but now is seen as the oldest surviving film in existence.
