jul 31, 1862 - Annexation of Utah
and New Mexico
Description:
Not long after Californian independence, the territorial governors of Utah and New Mexico petitioned the Californian government for annexation, each for their own separate reasons. New Mexican governor Abraham Rencher feared an invasion from Texas, and thus the extension of slavery into the territory. The Utah legislature, however, petitioned for annexation in the hopes that California would be less opposed to the Mormon practice of polygamy. While Stanford himself largely left them alone, his successors would prove them wrong.
The annexation of both territories by California on the 31st of July caused some conflict with Texas, who claimed all of their pre-annexation territory from the First Republic of Texas, a part of which overlapped with both territories. After some debate, a negotiation between both nations agreed that Texas would be granted its territory, setting the Rio Grande as most of the length of the border between California and Texas and firmly establishing its eastern border.
