may 14, 1750 - Rise of Opposition

Description:

The period was characterized by increasing opposition to the practice of slave trading. During the period, new intellectual movements that were against slave trade emerged, with some being based on religious grounds and others on humanitarian grounds. Some of the notable figures against the trade included Adam Smith, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a philosopher. These intellectuals were opposed to the brutality associated with slave trade and slavery (Orozco, 2016). They started realizing its cruelty, hence championing for its abolishment. The opinions of such movements caused many governments to change their perspectives on slave trade and slavery.
