jun 29, 1570 - Portuguese Establishment of a Colony

Description:

The Portuguese established a colony in Angola, known as Luanda. The establishment of this colony cemented the Portuguese role in the trade, and was an indicator that they would stay. The motive of establishing the colony was majorly commercial, in that the trade in slaves was a major source of revenue for their government . Furthermore, the move was perhaps fueled by the fact that other nations had started showing their interest in participating in the trade. 1562, for instance, witnessed the first Briton, John Hawkins, taking part in the trade. He made huge profits hauling slaves to Hispaniol, which may have attracted the attention of more Britons . Thus, most countries would have wanted to dominate the trade, to the extent that the Portuguese established a colony in Angola.(Image: http://epicworldhistory.blogspot.com/2012/07/portuguese-in-africa.html)
