Harper Lee, with To Kill a Mockingbird, showed the de facto racism which permeated all aspects of life for southern Blacks. Furthermore, it portrayed the lack of protections under the law that Blacks faced. Because it resonated across cultural lines, it was an instant classic which is still taught in classrooms today.
