Description:
The Vikings penetrated through the North. They took hold of Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, and eventually they reached Wessex
Same race as the Anglo-Saxons, uncivilized savages, pagan people, pirates and warriors.
Purpose: invasion, plundering of monasteries.
Legacy: they introduced a commercial spirit into the English idiosyncrasy, for they were mainly traders.
Politically, they contributed to the political unity of England:
- The Heptarchy
- The South and the Danelaw
- Swyne, Canute and Edward
They also contributed to the legal system: the word "law" is Danish.
