Description:
The first major defect happens when the “Gang of 8” leaves the temple. The “Gang of 8” were eight young people that didn’t want to be part of the temple anymore as they felt that the ideas that Jim Jones had originally promised would be taught were replaced with sex. They didn't like that the staff were getting special treatment and sexual assault was rampant in the Temple. They wrote Jim a letter personally (attached) and did not go to the police because of the fear of how Jim would react.
