On September 11, 2001, the most historic terrorist attacks in American history occurred. One fall morning in New York City, a commercial airliner crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Several moments later, a second plane hit the south tower. As both towers crumbled to the ground, a third hijacked plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. When it was all said and done, nearly 3,000 Americans had been killed and America was thrown into shock. No terrorist attacks had ever been seen like this before. It was soon discovered that the 19 terrorists behind the attacks were working for al-Qaeda, a terror organization centered in Saudi Arabia and other Arabian countries. After 9/11, a war on terror was announced. It is a war that we are still struggling to fight today, as ISIS and other terrorist groups continue to attack people around the world. The 9/11 attacks became a monumental moment in American history as citizens rallied together to fight a common enemy. This remains true today, as Americans continue to be separated on certain issues and united concerning terrorism. 9/11 was a horrific day and a destructive time in our history, but it laid the foundation for a unity that America would need for decades down the road as we continue to fight back.
