dec 5, 1933 - Prohibition Era ends

Description:

In the 19th century, alcohol was a culture. Alcoholism was rampant and it got to the point where violence, family issues, and corruption were all being traced back to the abuse of alcohol. This was the point in which people started introducing the idea of prohibition, or the outlawing of alcohol. In 1920, the 18th Amendment was passed, completely forbidding the sale, making, or transport of alcoholic beverages. This amendment quickly became hard to enforce, but it introduced a time called the Prohibition Era. The introduction of this era did little to stop people from drinking, although it did cause some men to take pledges of abstinence from alcohol. Rather, prohibition caused illegal activity to break out. Bootlegging, or the illegal sale and creation of alcohol, became common in cities. Gang violence rose up and overall, prohibition did more harm than intended. The Prohibition Era ended with the repeal of the 18th Amendment in 1933. From this point forward, alcoholism was less common, but it taught the government that by outlawing something, they would be enticing people to do exactly what they didn't want them to.
