Description:
In 1917, German Foreign Secretary Zimmerman sent what was supposed to be a secret message to the government of Mexico. He asked Mexico to attack the US, and Germany would, in turn, support Mexican territory claims in the southwest US. The message was intercepted by the British, who gave it to the US, and it was one of the major reasons the US entered World War I.Added to timeline:
