may 2, 1963 - Children's Crusade
Description:
The Children's Crusade was a nonviolent protest to desegregate public spaces in Birmingham. Organized by Martin Luther King Jr., it was designed to have children peacefully protest the segregation of lunch counters, businesses, and restrooms (Clark). The Children's Crusade was certainly effective in promoting change in Birmingham. The image of children being arrested and attacked spurred many adults into action and even caused President John F. Kennedy to demand resolution. This was one of many acts attempting to end segregation but the emotions the children evoked were very important to the growth of equality in Birmingham. The Children's Crusade was a critically important example of kids leading the way and causing change to occur, just like the Little Rock Nine.
