jan 1, 1787 - Three-Fifths Compromise
Description:
The South tried to count their slaves as part of their population in order to get more representation in Congress. The North was arguing that the South didn't treat slaves as people so therefore they shouldn't be able to count them as such. The Three-Fifths Compromise was a compromise that was supposed to satisfy both the North and the South by allowing the South to count each slave as three-fifths of a person towards population for representation. This compromise led to the Civil War because it allowed the slaveholder to have a vote for himself and for all of his slaves too. This angered the North because they thought it was unfair and therefore led to more problems in the future (Civil War included).
