Merger with Malaysia (29 dic 1962 año – 9 agos 1965 año)
Descripción:
Reasons why PAP government pushed for merger with Malaya:
Economic stability: British believed that Singapore would not survive long term without merger. Malaya produced the rubber and tin that kept SG's economy going and made it the capital city. With a rapidly growing population and lack of natural resources and declining trade due to neighbours becoming more independent and wanting to direct exports through their own ports and reducing Singapore's importance as a regional trading port, and tariffs on SG from Malaya, the merger would grant economic relief.
Political Independence: Merger was the only way the British would let go of Singapore. The British feared that Southeast Asia would fall under Communist Influence ever since the Cold War, influences in China, and rising communist movement in Indonesia and Vietnam. Merger of Malaya, Singapore, Brunei, North Borneo, and Sarawak would provide political stability.
