Maria Hertogh Riots (11 dic 1950 año – 14 dic 1950 año)
Descripción:
Maria was a Dutch girl who was raised by Malay-muslim woman, Che Aminah in muslim faith. After the war, her parents wanted her back, which triggered a legal battle.
In 1950, the British colonial court ruled that Maria should return to her biological Dutch Parents and did not recognise her Muslim upbringing. Photos of Maria in a Catholic convent and Western clothes angered the local Muslim community as the case was portrayed as a religious issue by the media, and Muslims felt disrespected.
Riots broke out after Che Aminah's appeal was rejected, and lasted for three days. Curfew was imposed and military troops were deployed as Muslims attacked any Eurasian or European in sight.
